Seven restaurants, 600 call-outs that never happened
HNF Management runs seven McDonald’s restaurants in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Owner and operator Imani Ford put Escalate in front of every crew member at all seven at once.

What was going wrong
A quick service restaurant runs on a schedule that assumes people arrive. When somebody cannot get there, the general manager finds out an hour before the shift, and the rest of their morning belongs to covering it rather than running the restaurant. Across seven restaurants that happens most days.
The reasons repeat. A ride falls through. There is no food in the house before an eight-hour shift on the floor. Childcare collapses at short notice, most often nights and weekends. None of it is a scheduling problem, so no scheduling tool reaches it.
What Escalate did
Crew members got a support line on their own phone, in English and Spanish, that answers in the time before a shift rather than at onboarding. A worker who cannot get to work asks, and the barrier is solved directly: a ride arranged, a meal covered, a childcare gap filled. More than 900 support requests came through the pilot.
Nothing was added to the manager’s workload. Crew members reach Escalate rather than their general manager, which is the whole point of putting it on their phone.
What changed
Across five and a half months the seven restaurants prevented more than 600 call-outs, at four to five saved per restaurant every week. At the roughly $350 an uncovered shift costs a quick service operator, that is about $300,000 the franchise did not lose.
NPR reported on the program nationally in August 2026.
At HNF Management, Inc., we are more than just a workplace, we’re a family. We do whatever it takes to make sure our team feels truly valued and supported. Adding Escalate to the benefits we provide our employees was a no-brainer.
